GETTING OUR PHIL OF A PERFECT SOX MOMENT

In honor of Philip Humber’s 34th birthday on Wednesday, here a few SoxNerd nuggets on the right-hander’s shining moment –- his perfect game of April 21, 2012:

*He said it: Humber was as stunned as everybody else that he had fashioned a perfect game on that Saturday afternoon in Seattle. “I don’t know what Philip Humber is doing in this list,” he said after the game of his place in history.

*Alexei … yes! Shortstop Alexei Ramirez was the only player who appeared in Humber’s and Mark Buehrle’s perfect games. … Ramirez had the last assist in Buehrle’s perfecto vs. Tampa at U.S. Cellular Field on June 23, 2009. His last defensive play in Humber’s feat was gloving a Dustin Ackley pop-up for out No. 20.

*Standing alone: Humber is the only pitcher in Major League history whose only complete game and shutout is a perfect game.

*Perfect no more: Buehrle retired the first 17 batters he faced in his next start to extend his streak of consecutive batters retired to a record 45.

The Boston Red Sox made sure Buehrle’s record would not be broken.

In his next start, Humber walked the leadoff batter and gave up a hit to the third man he faced en route to absorbing a Bostonian beating.

The Red Sox tagged Humber for nine earned runs on eight hits in five innings in the White Sox 10-3 loss five days after the perfect game.

Quick end: Humber would win only four more big league games – all in 2012 for the White Sox – in his big league career.

His last big league appearance was for Houston on Sept. 22, 2013. Humber last pitched professionally in Korea last season.

Bits: Humber’s perfect game was the 14th in Robin Ventura’s managerial career. … Paul Konerko homered in the game, extending the Sox homer streak in no-hitters to five. The last Sox no-hitter without a home run was Joel Horlen’s 1967 masterpiece vs. Detroit. …
