Brent Musburger announced this week that he will be ending his play-by-play career with ESPN/ABC at the end of the month.
The 77-year-old will call his final game on Jan. 31 when Kentucky hosts Georgia in a Southeastern Conference men’s basketball game on ESPN.
Musburger, one of television signature sports voices the past five decades, worked for the Chicago American in the mid-1960s after graduating from Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism and a stint as sports editor at the Daily Chronicle in DeKalb, Ill.
And one of his assignments for the American: Covering the White Sox.
Musburger is pictured among the media covering the team in the White Sox 1965 press guide — “The Exciting Story of the White Sox.”
Brent — literally — didn’t have the name then that he has now.
He was referred to as Brent “Mussburger” in the book!
Note: Thanks to @SoxNerd follower @McBarb for alerting me to Brent’s time in DeKalb. The AP story on his retirement did not reference that at all!
