63 days to Opening Day, White Sox fans!
Edgar Smith is one of four pitchers with 63 White Sox wins.
Some nuggets on this …
*All four pitchers with 63 Sox wins — Smith, Orval Grove, Gavin Floyd and Johnny Rigney — have losing records with the franchise
*Smith gave up the hit that started Joe DiMaggio’s on his epic 56-game hitting streak. In addition to the single on May 5, 1941 that started it all, Smith yielded the hits that extended “Joltin’ Joe’s” hit streak to 32 and 55 games.
*Smith was the first Sox pitcher to win an All-Star Game and the second to pitch in one. Both occurred in 1941 at Detroit. Smith got the win thanks to a walkoff homer from Ted Williams after giving up two runs in the top of the frame.
*Smith was also the first Sox pitcher to make the All-Star team twice (1941 and 1942). He was named to the 1942 squad despite starting the campaign 0-10.
