@SOXNERD RELIC OF THE DAY: FLY IT HIGH, FLY IT UGLY!

The flag celebrating the White Sox 1983 American League West Division title is framed and displayed on the dining level at Guaranteed Rate Field.

It is the last thing I see before heading into the scoreboard control room at the park.

The 1983 “Winning Ugly” White Sox carved out a permanent spot in team annals by winning 99 games and capturing the West crown by a record 20 games.

The Sox hoisted the championship flag above Comiskey Park on Sept. 18 the day after they won they West. Mike Squires, the longest-tenured Sox, helped raise the flag before a 6-0 win over Seattle before a charged gathering of 40,984 at 35th and Shields.

@SOXNERD RELIC OF THE DAY: GOOSE IS ON THE LOOSE

Celebrities signing the wall in the audio room is one of the many cool rituals/traditions we have in White Sox scoreboard control.

When Rich “Goose” Gossage visited us during the 1972 tribute weekend in 2012, we asked him to sign our wall and he gladly obliged.

For all his menacing histrionicsĀ on the mound, off the field Gossage has been nothing but accommodating to me in the few times I encountered him.

Gossage, a Hall of Famer, pitched for the White Sox from 1972 to 1976.
