THE GHOSTS OF GREAT CAREERS PAST

A recent Twitter birthday post on Steve Carlton, who had a cup of coffee with the White Sox, ignited an interesting exchange.

The end result reinforced the fact that a lot of great players and familiar names filled in the back ends of their careers with the White Sox.

I revisited the topic today because we are 99 days out from the White Sox Opener and Manny Ramirez wore 99 when he closed his career with the Sox in 2010.

Thanks to @soxnerd Twitter followers @markbernhard55 and @Schefffan1, we assembled a Sox list of retreads who played on the Southside.

Some did OK (like Moose Skowron), some did better than OK (like Tom Seaver) but most were underachievers, disappointing or meh.

The list of Ex-Great Sox: Steve Carlton, Chris Sabo, Dave Righetti, Rob Dibble, Atlee Hammaker, Marvin Freeman, Mike Devereaux, Adam Dunn, Adam Laroche, Red Ruffing, Phil Regan, Claude Osteen, Moe Drabowsky, Doug Drabek, Sparky Lyle, David Wells, George Foster, Rocky Colavito, Dave Stieb, Jose Canseco, Ken Griffey Jr., George Bell, Steve Sax, Manny Ramirez, Clay Carroll, Ken Hill, Sandy Alomar Jr., Roberto Alomar, Ron Santo, Leon Wagner, Omar Vizquel, Ron Blomberg, Harold Baines 2001-01, Ron Reed, Tom Seaver, Paul Richards (1976 manager), Dale Sveum, Bill Dawley, Ken Boyer, John Romano, Bobby Bonds, Tommy Davis, Oscar Gamble 1985, Moose Skowron, Ken Boyer, Nick Swisher, 1993 Ivan Calderon and Barry Jones, Jerry Reuss, Charlie Hough, Tom Gordon …
